Sterling’s Uncertain Future at Chelsea After UEFA Squad Omission
Raheem Sterling’s place at Chelsea has become increasingly precarious after he was left out of the squad for their Europa Conference League play-off first leg against Servette tomorrow, Thursday 22 August.
This marks the 29-year-old winger’s second successive squad omission, following his exclusion from the English Premier League opener against Manchester City on Sunday, 18 August.
Despite a promising pre-season where he featured for the Blues in all six matches, Sterling’s absence has raised questions about his future at Stamford Bridge. His representatives have publicly demanded clarity, especially with the summer transfer window closing in ten days.
Manager Enzo Maresca, while initially stating his desire to keep Sterling at the club, now appears to be reconsidering his stance. Sterling’s omission from the UEFA squad, coupled with the uncertainty surrounding other senior players like Ben Chilwell, suggests a significant shift in Chelsea’s approach under new ownership.
Speculation is mounting that the club may be trying to offload Sterling, who joined Chelsea last year as one of their marquee signings. The club’s recent focus has been on procuring younger talents and long-term contracts, but only time will tell what Maresca’s future actions will be.
